Instructions
Students will be required to create a 1-2 page infographic based (briefly) on their survey results and the epidemiology of their group topic. If you have never made an infographic before, Pikochart or Canva are good places to start. You are not expected to purchase an account to download your final work. Taking a screenshot is acceptable. This is independent/individual work.
Presentations are not intended to be entirely comprehensive, but they are expected to review epidemiologic concepts explored during lecture such as disease frequency, descriptive epidemiology, measures of association, and screening.
If you want to include information on the clinical background or symptoms of your topic (if applicable), you can, but it should not be the focus of your presentation (since a medical perspective is not an epi perspective). This whole project is expected to be 1-2 pages. I do not want to see the first page as all clinical information.
The following should be included in your infographic:
Define the condition (Are there different criteria?)
Be succinct here. I am not asking you to tell me about the 4 types of Disease X and how each is defined. It would be enough to state in general “There are 4 types of Disease X.”
I am also not asking you to give me TWO definitions that say the same thing. One is enough. The exemplary infographic below has both, though this is not the direction I want you to go into.
Brief survey results. How many responses did you get? What were your survey questions? Do you want to add other interesting findings? This should be no more than 1/4 of a page.
Transition to the broad epidemiology of your topic:
Measures of disease frequency (What is the distribution in the population? Think about person, place, and time factors and descriptive epidemiology)
You will be graded on BOTH the measures of disease frequency you provide and your ability to provide descriptive epidemiology
Descriptive epi is not about “anyone can get the disease at any time in their life”–if you are confused, go back to your notes on descriptive epidemiology (or ask me).
Factors associated with your topic (quantified with research) (This is analytic epidemiology)
What groups are disproportionately affected? This should be in alignment with measures of disease frequency. If you state 70% of people with the disease are male, then perhaps there is an increased risk in men.
Do not state “gender is a risk factor” , Instead: Men are at a (X) greater risk than women. (must include comparison group)
Screening (How is the disease identified?)
Policy & Prevention Strategies (What is being done to lessen the burden of disease?)
After the infographic is completed, students are expected to record a brief oral presentation of their infographic. There is no one way to record your presentation. Students have been creative with this (recorded themselves on Zoom, used their phone’s camera, or microphone, PowerPoint audio, etc). Just make sure you submit a recording with quality good enough for me to hear you and grade you.
A detailed rubric is included. Be mindful that this is an infographic. There should be images, symbols, icons, other graphics to support your text. This should not be text heavy. This should not read like a paper or a powerpoint presentation. Be mindful of the colors that you use and where you place images. Bright colors and overuse of graphics to make this more ‘visual’ is not always a good thing. Consider how easy or difficult it may be for others to read your work (color contrast); especially if they may be visually impaired.
An example of great work from a previous semester is attached (prior to the inclusion of survey results). The one thing to change below is the two definitions provided. There should only be one.
Note: Formatted references are required, though they do not need to appear on the infographic itself.
Only the most recent submission will be kept if you submit multiple times. Be sure to submit your infographic, recording, and references together (unless the references go on your infographic).
