Literature Review
Please prepare a literature review on your selected topic. Keep in mind that you will be drawing on this review for your final paper (research design). Your literature review must contain at least five scholarly sources (peer-reviewed journal articles, NOT newspaper/magazine articles.). Be sure to provide complete citations for each article on a Works Cited page. Your assignment has two components:
1. A written overview of each of your five journal articles—all five must be included and each should receive one medium-length paragraph of discussion. Do not copy-paste article abstracts. Summarize the article in your own words, focusing on the researcher’s variables, methods, data and findings. Please raise any criticism or reflections you have on the article briefly at the end of each paragraph.
2. Construct a table that identifies the key concepts (i.e. variables), methods of investigation (Survey? Ethnography? Experiment? Interviews?), measurements of variables (operational definitions), and findings for each article. You do not need to use complete sentences. However, be sure your phrasing is clear to someone who has not read the article (me).
**All articles should be fully and properly cited (author, title, journal, date of publication, page numbers of journal) in a Works Cited section at the end of your paper.
***What is a “scholarly” paper? àA peer-reviewed article in a social scientific journal. Examples of such are American Sociological Review, Work and Occupations, Journal of Marriage and Family, Criminology, etc. Access to many such journals and their articles can be gained by visiting JSTOR at www.jstor.org (must be accessed through campus computer or logged on through OW library account to see and print full articles).
Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to share some additional guidance for Paper 2, the lit review. This paper should be built around your central research question – ideally a revised version of the one you proposed in Paper 1, but if you’ve changed it since then that’s OK.
A sociological research question should be about the relationship between two variables (concepts) among specific units of analysis. One of those variables (typically the IV) must be a group- rather than individual-level variable. For example:
A) “Does immigration status impact college attendance?” – units of analysis: college-age residents of a country/state, etc.
B) “Does income inequality raise urban crime rates?” – units of analysis: cities
C) “Does gender affect voting behavior in presidential elections?” units of analysis: eligible voters in the US (all genders)
These are just examples, but they are meant to demonstrate the general form of good research questions. Most of your paper should revolve around your discussion/description of 5 published articles that are related to your research question.
Hope that helps!
My research question was
How do upcoming technologies, such as Al and VR, merge with growing gender roles, and what impact do these intersections have on social dynamics, equity, and cultural norms in the 21st century? but you can change it
