Narco
Cultura Documentary
Your
final paper assignment is to write an essay using the theories you learned
about in the first part of the course to analyze the types of criminal
subcultures you learned about at the end of the course. You are to pick one SPECIFIC example
from both the documentary and at least one reading for 4 of the 5 different
criminal subcultures you learned about in the second part of the
course. The 6 criminal subcultures are: gangs, graffiti,
drugs, prostitution, organized crime and white collar crime. You are
to use at least 8 different theories to analyze
your examples from the following list: Deterrence Theory, Atavism,
Critiques of Pathology, Strain Theory/Opportunity Structures, Social
Disorganization, Subcultural Theory, Differential Association, Neutralization,
Control Theory, Broken Windows Theory, Labeling Theory, Selective Enforcement,
Marxist Theory, Anarchist Theory, and Cultural Criminology. You are ONLY allowed
to use theories from this course and not any other course. For each example
from the criminal subculture readings or documentaries you use, you must
analyze why the theory you match it with does or does not explain the example
you choose. You must use examples of criminal subcultures from both the
assigned readings and the documentaries you watched in class.
Your paper will consist of 10 body paragraphs using 4 examples from readings
and 4 examples from documentaries for each type of criminal subculture you
choose, along with an introduction and conclusion for a total of 8 paragraphs.
Since you are only required to use a minimum of 8 different theories, you may
use the same theory twice, so long as you use a total of 8 different theories
in your paper.
Be
advised, I appreciate that your analysis is entirely subjective, and I want you
to be completely confident that you will not be favored or punished for any
opinions or positions you take in your essay. Please DO NOT summarize
the entire content of the theories, readings or documentaries any more than is
necessary to provide sufficient analysis for the examples you choose. I have
seen the documentaries already, I have read the readings… I don’t need a recap.
Given the time constraints of this course, you DO NOT need to
provide proper APA or MLA citations for theories or readings that you
discuss. DO NOT quote directly from the text unless you
clearly cite the source of your quote and contain the entire quote within
quotation marks. I will not be grading your spelling or grammar, but please use
spellcheck and try to make your essay clean. Most important of all, make sure
your writing is coherent and makes sense. I will be grading your essay
primarily on the content and logic of your analysis, however if your writing is
unintelligible and/or incoherent I will have to dock points accordingly. You
will lose 2 points for every paragraph less than 10 that does not contain both
a theory from before the 2nd midterm and a specific example from the reading or
documentary for each of the 5 types of criminal subcultures you choose.
At
the beginning of Week 12 you must turn in a ROUGH
DRAFT of your introduction and the first four examples from the gangs
and drugs documentaries and readings. Please use a different theory for all 4
of your examples.
o Use 12-point Calibri or Cambria font, double spaced
with 1” margins
o Insert page numbers for every page
o No header, No cover page
