Write a 8-12 paper in times new roman font 12 double-spaced. Your paper should have a properly cited bibliography using Chicago and it should include 4-6 primary and secondary sources at least, a literature review section and an introduction and conclusion. Students are strongly urged to see me and discuss their final paper if they have not already done so. I will be available during exam week for final questions.
The final paper topic should feature a synthesis and engagement with the course themes and it should follow from the feedback and topic of your book review. The paper should adhere to the following rubric: 1) strong-well argued research (evidence for argument), 2) cogent and clear writing (adhering to the Chicago manual of style and Chicago citation style; good flow of lucid and well-crafted writing, limited grammatical and stylistic errors) 3) engagement with some course themes and topics (examples include the nature of colonialism, the decline thesis, modernity, secularism) and 4) original argument.
Wikipedia, Britannica, and other online encyclopedias do not count as academic sources. Consult the Hormann librarians or myself if you have questions concerning sources. The International Journal of Middle East Studies, Journal of Turkish & Ottoman Studies and the Journal of Arabian Studies are standard journals to learn about the area.
