The purpose of this assignment is to get you started researching and writing! You will submit a rough draft of your zine’s introductory paragraph, as well as something called an annotated bibliography. I will first explain the annotated bibliography, and then move on to the introductory paragraph. After reviewing this assignment, please post any questions you may have in the Community Forum.
To format this assignment, please include your introductory paragraph first, followed by the annotated bibliography. Your submission should be double spaced, using 12 point font, and be submitted as a Word document. You will later copy and paste your work to a Google Sites page.
Introductory Paragraph:
Introductory Paragraph: Include an introductory paragraph that explains the topic of your website and what readers can expect to find there. You can think of it as a roadmap for your reader for what to expect. This component is worth 10 points and will be graded on how well it achieves the following criteria:
Clearly provides the reader with what to expect from the website
Outlines the racial justice movement your website will focus on—
What is the movement? Who does it impact? What is the timeline of this movement? Where is this topic happening? Get at the who, what, when, and where of your social movement.
Outlines the theoretical frameworks your analysis will be using, with a brief explanation of how you plan to use them. This gets a the why aspect of your topic and will be explained in more depth when the rough draft is due.
Introduces the reflection or concepts your website will engage with as a whole
Annotated Bibliography:
For this part of the assignment, you will create an annotated bibliography, which is a list of research sources with short descriptions about each source. These short descriptions will help you synthesize your research as your write your introductory paragraph. Each annotation should be about 4-6 sentences and is worth 50 points. Please provide a list of citations, in alphabetical order by author’s last name, in APA format (see the module 1 assignment for a refresher) and under each citation, respond to the following prompts:
What is the main topic of this source?
This is asking you to explain the broad focus of your source.
What is the author’s main argument?
This is asking to explain what main point the author wants to make about this topic.
How will you use this source for your research?
This is asking you to explain what ideas, quotes, concepts, or information are useful to your research.
What is one question this source raises for you, about your topic?
These questions can act as guides as you continue your research, as as tools to help you start writing your explanatory analyses.
Annotation example:
Hecht, J. (2023). “What is Gender and Society and Women’s Studies?” Module 2 PowerPoint Slides SOC212.
This PowerPoint presentation is about the origin of classes like gender & society and women’s studies. Prof. Hecht illustrates that these courses grew out of social movements when women and other marginalized groups demanded their issues be included on equal grounds in higher education. I will use this this source to help me explain the role marginalized people have played in the fight for equality in education. One question I have is as follows: How do social movements re-imagine the role of gender and higher education in our society?
Types of Sources you should include:
*Note that by completing this assignment, you basically have your Works Cited page ready to go. You may need to update the PowerPoint slides, lecture, or learning material citations, but otherwise alls you have to do is remove the annotations and you’ll be set to copy and paste these to the final Works Cited section of your website.
