For this assignment, each student should interview (i.e. have a real conversation of some length) a person who is a member of an oppressed group.
This includes, but is not limited to, a person of ethnic or racial vulnerability, a woman, someone living in poverty, and elderly person, a person with a disability or a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Write a 5-page paper, excluding title and reference pages, summarizing your interview and relate it to your reading from a web-based article that has connection to this population. In addition, you must find a PEER-REVIEWED article related to the population to which your interviewee belongs (see list of social work journals).
You will summarize the article in 2-3 paragraphs and write how this article is connected to the person or the population the person represents; note any similarities or differences between what you found in the interview vs. what the article discussed. Your paper should include the following information:

What has been their experience living as an oppressed person within a dominant culture?
What specific strengths have they developed as a result of living as a person under oppression?
What barriers in various systems have they encountered in trying to get their human services needs met? (i.e. – what systems have not worked well for them?)
What can you as a potential social worker learn from what the person you interview has told you might help you and other social workers provide better services to people who are members of oppressed groups?

Do NOT include any information that will identify the person that you interviewed. Confidentiality of client information is required. Students should never use the actual name or any other identifying information regarding to the client/person they may discuss or write
