ASSIGNMENT: Choose one of the following famous playwrights: Henrik Ibsen, Anton Chekhov, Susan Glaspell, Guan Hanqing, Chkamatsu Monzaemon, Tennessee Williams, Caryl Churchill, Arthur Miller, Oscar Wilde, or Samuel Beckett. (I recommend doing some initial quick research on each one to see who you think sounds interesting to write about).
You will write a research paper on your chosen playwright. Your paper should address the following topics (doesn’t have to necessarily be in this order):
Why is your playwright considered significant/important?
What are some notable plays your playwright wrote? What are basic summaries of their plots/stories?
What types of stories and/or genres did your playwright become known for writing?
What patterns/themes are found in your playwright’s plays? Why?
What was your playwright’s life like (professionally and personally)?
What/who influenced your playwright’s work (if any)?
How have audiences, critics, and historians reacted to your playwright’s plays?
PAPER SPECIFICS:
750-1,000 words (including the Bibliography)
Edit paper carefully for spelling and grammar errors.
Bibliography at end of paper with citations in any format of your choosing (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.)
At least four different sources should be cited. Sources should be credible and legitimate (for example Wikipedia is not a credible legitimate research source). Credible sources can include textbooks, articles in academic journals, articles from reputable newspapers/magazines, official interviews (video or audio), and official websites of legitimate institutions/companies/organizations.
You must cite sources within your paper when referring to direct information. If you quote or strongly paraphrase from a source within your paper (which should happen frequently in a research paper) without citing it at the end of the sentence, it is considered plagiarism. When citing within your paper, use “Author-Date” style (putting the author’s last name and date of publication in parenthesis at the end of the sentence it’s being cited in).
