Antibiotic Resistance
What were the key factors that increased the rate of antibiotic resistance? If we could turn back time to the early days of antibiotic use what factors could be changed to reduce the rate?
When comparing the use of antibiotics in the food supply to other countries what factors do you think influence their use in the United States? What ideas do you have that could reduce their use or need to do this?
Think of the bedside nurse and antibiotics that he or she is hanging. What advice or direction should that nurse give their patients both in and out of the hospital when antibiotics are required?
Do you have any worries or concerns following this documentary about the future of medicine as it relates to antibiotics and their use? What actions could be taken by the pharmaceutical industry to change those concerns? Should the FDA look into ways to reduce antibiotic use or misuse?
Many countries have varied approaches to access to antibiotics with some being more restrictive and some being sold at any pharmacy without a prescription. Do you feel the World Health Organization or other global agencies should monitor or assist in this area? Why or why not?
