What do I get out of this?
This task will give you practice developing your empirical and quantitative skills. This is one of those assignments that can give you great material for those job interviews! Market this activity in an interview using the STAR Method (Situation, Task, Action, Result): One common interview question is: What would you do if you had to complete a task you were unfamiliar with? Keep this in mind as you complete this task!
Activity Summary
In this lab, you will look at fossil specimens from six species (Australopithecus africanus, Homo habilis, Homo rudolfensis, Homo erectus, Neanderthal, and Homo sapiens). Examine the 3D models and record what differences you observe between them. After your data collection, you will answer some questions to gain practice communicating your observations to others and sharing your expertise.
What do I need to do?
There are 3 parts. For each part, complete the worksheet chart of observations and answer the related question in 130-160 words. There is NO comprehensive/long reflection essay for Fieldwork Task 4.
Here is a link to the course page that has all the 3D models you will need for this task: 3D Models of Fossils for Fieldwork Task 4
Part 1: Trends in the Genus Homo
Examine four skulls (Au. africanus, H. habilis, H. erectus, and H. sapiens). The links to the models are embedded in the lab worksheet pdf, or you can see them on brightspace at the link above.
Answer the question: (1) Based on your observations, what are two major trends that continue across the genus Homo?
Part 2: Lumping and Splitting: Homo habilis v. Homo rudolfensis
Compare the type specimens for Homo habilis and (possible) Homo rudolfensis; complete the chart
Answer the two questions: (2) Consider other features: what similarities do you see between the two fossils? (3) Based on your observations, do you think that H. habilis should be one species or split into two? Why or why not?
Part 3: Homo erectus Over Space and Time
Examine Homo erectus fossils from four different sites; complete the chart
Answer the question: (4) How would you describe what changes over time for Homo erectus?
What do I submit?
