For this assignment you will do the presentation on Malaria, conduct original research and present your research to the class. This assignment will be turned in as a powerpoint presentation. Your presentation should include a discussion of the specific ecology of this pathogen, as well as social and environmental factors that could enhance its pandemic potential. Must include bibliography at the end.
Specific questions to address in your research:
Are cases of this diseases likely to increase or decrease over the next 15 years? What is driving these changes in mortality?
What technologies are currently available to control or prevent this infection?
Are these technologies working? Why or why not?
Are these technologies only working within certain populations? Why or why not?
Is this a novel pathogen? Is there high mortality?
Who is most vulnerable to this disease?
What are the predicted global morbidity and mortality totals for this disease over the next decade? What can be done to improve this scenario?
Research
You SHOULD do outside research for this assignment, and include a bibliography of sources. Make sure your research is done with reputable, scholarly sources. Material taken from survivalist blogs, dodgy nutritional supplement companies or crackpot “experts” is not legitimate. Look for publications by respected organizations such as the World Health Association, Centers for Disease Control, CIDRAP (Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy), or other groups that study infectious disease, biosecurity and epidemiology.
The last slide of your presentation should include a full bibliography. Feel free to be creative.
Your presentation should be 10-15 minutes long, or no more than 20 powerpoint slides.
