This assignment serves as your first speech in our class and will be centered around delivering a speech around a topic you have selected based upon your personal interests. It will require you to develop an informative presentation that you will deliver to your classmates. You will also be responsible for completing a research synthesis chart, formal outline, and visual aid as part of this assignment.
Thus, in choosing a topic you should consider something you actually are passionate about. Whatever topic you choose will ultimately be delivered as a 3-4 minute speech video. You also need to choose a topic that will be suitable for finding at least 3 credible sources of information (i.e., articles, datasets, websites, testimony) that you will cite in your outline, on a reference page at the end of your outline, and aloud during your speech. There will be no controversial subjects allowed (politics, religion, laws, etc.), but any topic you are passionate about (video games, movies, television, an aspect of your field of study, personal hobbies, etc.) are fair game for topic selection.
This assignment emphasizes research, use of examples to support ideas, and delivery using a visual aid, as well as logical organization. It is important that you not only organize your thoughts into clear and concise main points. For the visual aid, you will be asked to use a slideshow that complements your presentation. This visual aid must reflect information you present in your speech. You will need to practice your speech with your visual aid to ensure you maintain good delivery throughout. You should cite any sources for images/clips in your visual aid, unless you create it yourself. The visual aid does NOT count toward your 3 sources. All video clips are limited to no longer than 30 seconds, and you are encouraged to follow Assertion Evidence Model slide design guidelines (http://www.assertion-evidence.com/).
As mentioned above, you are also required to construct a formal outline. This outline will include a word-for-word intro and conclusion, as well as transitions, and separate, single-sentence entries for your main and supporting points. You will also need to cite your 3 required sources using APA format within the text of your outline (parenthetical citations) and on an APA reference page that will be attached to your outline. You will turn this outline in electronically to Blackboard on April 28, 2024. You will also make use of a research synthesis chart to help you organize, analyze, place, and cite the information from your sources. That document will also be turned in to Blackboard by April 28, 2024.
Specific Requirements:
ŸMake an informative speech presentation on a subject of your choice, allowing your audience to learn more about the topic based on the information provided.
ŸTime limit: 3-4 minutes
ŸDevelop a central idea statement that meets the criteria discussed in class (i.e., full sentence, one distinct idea, etc.)
ŸOrganize your thoughts into concise and balanced main points according to an appropriate pattern of organization; use a variety of examples and cite at least 3 credible sources to support main points.
ŸDevelop a creative introduction and conclusion.
ŸDemonstrate skillful use of transitions.
ŸDemonstrate a clear attempt to inform your audience by speaking effectively and presenting information that has been thoroughly researched.
ŸUse an extemporaneous speaking style. This means that you are not to read your speech or to memorize your speech, but are to talk to the audience from notes. You must be concerned with both physical and vocal delivery.
ŸA typed, full sentence outline of your presentation is due in Blackboard by April 28, 2024.
ŸYour typed, complete research synthesis chart is also due in Blackboard by April 28, 2024.
Video Presentations must be uploaded to YouTube as unlisted videos, with the link being copied and pasted to a word document as a Hyperlink to the Blackboard Submission Link by 11:59 pm on April 28, 2024.
