Part I (first three paragraphs) of the independent research paper is due on Mond

April 22, 2024

Part I (first three paragraphs) of the independent research paper is due on Monday, April 22. Part 1 is valued at 100 points. Part II, the completed paper, is worth 200 points, and is due for grading on Thursday, April 25. The total paper, which is Part II, will be submitted for grading on Thursday, April 25, 2023 for grade submission. It is valued at an additional 200 points. These are my expectations regarding this submission:
The text of the paper will be seven pages plus an additional page for Works Cited.
This is not to be a personal essay, so think twice before you use the pronoun, “I.”
At least five sources will be used, one of which must be in print form (a PDF is acceptable).
The essay will comport with the rules of the Modern Language Association (MLA) with respect to formatting, including title, pagination, Works Cited, margins, in-text citation (parenthetical citation) and other MLA requirements. Do not submit a cover page. Do not use APA formatting, which emphasizes dates of authorship rather than sources of citations.
Make sure you use summary, paraphrase, and quotation, as we have discussed in class and practiced in your summary essay.
You may choose anytopic you desire for this paper, as long as it is academically respectable.  If there are any doubts about this, please consult the instructor. You must prove your point with statistics, facts, expert testimony, logic and appeals to pathos (values or needs) determined by leading scholars.
The research paper may be either an explanatory synthesis or an argumentative synthesis.  If argumentative, you are expected to either take a side in an existing argument, or establish your own argument on the topic. You are expected to use concession as part of your argument strategy; that is, you must respectfully acknowledge and restate the opponents’ position(s) as you proceed with your argument and recognize its merit where it can be found.
If you choose an explanatory synthesis, be careful not to allow the sources to control the discussion.  You must control the informational discussion.
