Race has been a contentious topic throughout history, often leading to discrimination, prejudice, and even violence. As a Master level student, I intend to delve into the complexities of the concept of race, exploring both scientific and social perspectives. To gain further insights, I interviewed a family member and a friend to gauge their perspectives on race and to educate them on the social construction of race based on scientific evidence.
During the interviews, I asked my family member and friend two key questions: How many races do they think exist in the world? Do they believe any one race is superior to another? The responses I received were varied but insightful. My family member believed in the existence of multiple races, citing physical differences such as skin color, facial features, and hair texture. However, they did not believe that any one race was superior to another, emphasizing the importance of equality and respect for all individuals irrespective of their racial background. On the other hand, my friend expressed a more nuanced view, acknowledging the social and cultural aspects of race while also recognizing the impact of historical injustices and systemic inequalities that have perpetuated racial hierarchies.
Drawing on the information provided in the book, accompanying PowerPoint, and CrashCourse videos, I explained to my family member and friend the scientific perspective on race. Scientists do not consider race to be a biological concept but rather a social construct that varies depending on the society and era. The idea of the Social Construction of Race challenges traditional notions of race as a fixed and biological category, highlighting the fluidity and malleability of racial identities. This constructivist approach underscores the role of social, political, and historical factors in shaping perceptions of race and racial hierarchies.
Upon sharing this information with my family member and friend, I was met with both intrigue and skepticism.
