Evidence-Based Practices (EBP) Report Instructions and Rubric
The purpose of this project is to meet 5 over-arching class objectives:
Understand the importance of research in advancing the counseling profession,
Apply the use of research to inform evidence-based practice, within the context of
counselors’ roles and responsibilities as members of an interdisciplinary emergency management response team during or following a local, regional, or national crisis, disaster or other trauma-causing event
Critical Analysis of Empirical Evidence: Explore article results, hypothesis, and provide a critical analysis of the mental health service delivery modalities and networks within the continuum of care, such as primary care, outpatient, partial treatment, inpatient, and aftercare (CMHC.5.b).
Counselor Community Based Response: Explore the strategies to promote client understanding of and access to a variety of community-based resources to facilitate empowerment (CACREP.V.s).
Strategies for community collaboration and outreach (CMHC.5.i).
Students will investigate appropriate, research-based interventions of counselors following a local, regional, or national crisis, disaster or other trauma-causing event that affects a community or specific group or population of people. (It’s probably a good idea to choose one specific type of such a loss, as an example of how this community or group might be affected; e.g., if you chose the Aurora theater shooting, the subject you’d be researching is a massshooting/crime.) Next, research appropriate empirically-based interdisciplinary emergency response interventions for counselors for this kind of loss. As a critical consumer of information (Bowden, 2003), the student should research resources (undoubtedly most of these will be articles; these should be published in peer-reviewed journals) for those that identify empirically- based practices (EBP) of counselors working in outreach and community based systems. This means it is not sufficient to simply use “think”-type or “processing” descriptive articles; you must use sources involving research and validated outcomes related to preparedness, responsiveness, or recovery.
Using your library resources, find articles that are either:
an empirical study/survey article that evaluates some aspect of counseling (e.g., factors
that contribute to effective emergency management; most effective functions, skills, or
behaviors counselors should use, etc.), or
a meta-analysis which synthesizes various/multiple research studies of contributors to
counseling effectiveness.
Keywords: disaster response; interdisciplinary team response; crisis preparedness; disaster planning; shared trauma; post-disaster; resilience; primary mental health services; terrorism; trauma-sensitive; trauma groupwork; community based crisis care
Each article should include a specific research method of some kind, and will therefore have statistical data that “found” something about multidisciplinary counseling outcome/effectiveness/validation. Articles should be ideally year 2003 or newer (classical articles will be considered on a case-by-case basis only, and require specific permission).Minimum 4 scholarly sources required (books or articles); websites do not qualify as “scholarly sources” but may be included as additional supporting sources to the 4 required.
DO NOT use first-person language. Make sure that you are critically analyzing the research, rather than simply repeating the results. This is not an annotated bibliography. Articles will need to be synthesized, and writing style should be cohesive.
Write a 4-page (minimum text) report of the research utilizing the rubric bellow.
Project parameters:
Use of correct APA 7th style, including cover page and reference page
Typed, double-spaced , with 1” margins, and in 12-point Times New Roman font
Contain citations and references formatted according to the current APA Publication
Manual (7th ed.) guidelines
Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation; free from typographical errors
Minimum 4 primary quality (scholarly) sources related to empirically-based practices
(EBP); other resources may be used as supporting sources only
Minimum 4 pages text
Adhere to minimum page length, formatting, and content guidelines – cover pages and
reference pages will not be counted toward fulfilling the required page length. Incorrectly
completed assignments will be evaluated as such. 8. Use headings for each rubric criteria.
