For this short paper, you will write a literary analysis of “cheapness,” as defined by Jason Moore and Raj Patel, in a short story of your choosing by Ghassan Kanafani.
Your analysis should include the following:
A clear thesis statement that crafts an analytical argument around one or two of the first six of Moore and Patel’s seven “cheaps” (nature, work, care, food, energy, money)
A very brief description of the “cheap(ened)” thing(s) in question
A working definition of “cheapness” as discussed in lecture
A summary of your chosen story that does not exceed 75-80 words
One or more close readings of image(s), symbol(s), phrase(s) etc. in your chosen story, in conversation with your chosen “cheap(ened)” thing
Be sure to quote directly and very concisely from the text
**Please note: you can read a given literary symbol/object/phrase as embodying the process of cheapening, AND/OR you can read the literary depiction of a given symbol/object/phrase as resisting the cheapening process as well / instead.
A conclusion that relates your close readings to the effect of recovering / mourning / illuminating / [verb of your choice] the cheapening of lives, which is of course Moore and Patel’s seventh and final “cheap.”
