1. Prep Assignment
You will complete a prep assignment to help you organize your final paper and presentation. A template is available on Canvas to help you with the formatting of this assignment. In your prep assignment, you include the following information:
Identify 3 media sources such as a movie, a television commercial, a sitcom, a printed ads, newspaper articles, podcast, etc.
• You will:
o Describe each source.
o Identify one key concept related to each source
o Briefly explain the connection between the concept and the media source
You will then use this as the outline for your final paper.
2. For your final paper, you will describe each media source in more detail, will choose an empirical article for each topic, and in your paper elaborate on the way in which the concept you chose is reflected in the media source. You will use your prep assignment to help guide this writing. Your final paper will describe the three media sources and must include at least THREE empirical references in total, with one reference connected to each media source. Please do a different topic for each media source. Your paper must be between 1000-1250 words (roughly 4 pages, double-spaced) written in APA style, which also includes references page at the end of the paper. Keep in mind that references are not included in the word count.
To help write your final paper, you should consider:
1) What general topic is your paper addressing? (Hint: should be something along the lines of the
portrayal of Latinxs in the media, with a focus on the psychological themes you find)
2) What concepts related to Latinx psychology are you addressing?
3) What has previous research on this (or related) topics demonstrated?
4) What is the purpose of the research described in this paper? How does it complement previous
research on this topic? What is/are the author(s) hypothesis/hypotheses? Do the hypotheses
make sense to you?
5) How is the research connected to your media sources?
6) How does psychological research understand the role of media in shaping identities of Latinxs,
perpetuating or challenging stereotypes about Latinxs, or addressing the needs of Latinxs in the United States?
An excellent paper will:
Will make liberal use of course content, including readings and concepts discussed in class
Demonstrate a deep and clear understanding of the materials discussed in class
Use at minimum one peer-reviewed journal article for each media source (and thus each
concept) for a total of three empirical references
Discuss the real-world implications of the research findings as they relate to your media source
Be well written: clear, concise, and error-free
3. for the presentation part please write a presentation of 5 minutes will include one of the three media sources chosen for your final paper. You will then do a more in-depth analysis of this media source. In your presentation, you will include the following:
▪ Overview of the media source chosen (choose 1 of 3 from your paper)
▪ Discuss at least ONE psychological theories/concepts (e.g., marianismo, familismo)
from class that relate to the media source and Latinx psychology
▪ Summarize what you learned with this assignment
