Students will choose from one of three movies related to addiction: (a) 28 Days, (b) Flight, or (c) Clean and Sober. Please note these movies may contain graphic content or profanity. Any student uncomfortable with this should contact the instructor immediately to discuss a different case study. Students are responsible for gaining access to one of these movies but may contact the instructor to discuss potential options. Students will watch their chosen movie through the lens of a counselor and complete a research paper and case conceptualization on the character suffering from addiction.
Using the chosen movie case study, students will apply material from the course to describe each of the following:
Etiology/Conceptualization: Using the theories related to addiction (biological/genetic, psychological, familial, cultural/social, environmental, etc.) describe the etiology of this individual’s addiction and any co-occurring disorders the individual might be experiencing. (CMHC 5. C. 1.c, 1.d, 2.e, 2.j)
Assessment: Describe the screening and assessment methods you would use with this individual and your rationale for choosing these methods. (CMHC 5. C. 1.e)
Diagnosis: Describe your diagnostic impressions and rationale (e.g., criteria met from the DSM-5) for substance-related or addictive disorders. Considering that substance use disorders can mimic other disorders, describe one differential diagnosis that is not a substance-related or addictive disorder (i.e., mental health disorder). (CMHC 5. C. 2.d., 2.e)
Treatment: Describe your recommended treatment for this individual including appropriate levels-of-care (i.e., inpatient, intensive outpatient, outpatient) and any step- down levels. Include culturally-relevant theory-based techniques and interventions for prevention and treatment you would recommend for this individual, including a focus on preventing relapse. (CMHC 5. C. 1.b., 1.c, 2.b, 2.c, 2.j, 3.b)
Students are expected to use a minimum of five (5) recent scholarly sources to substantiate their description of the etiology, selection of assessment methods, diagnostic impressions, and recommendations for treatment. The paper length, including title and reference pages (no abstract necessary), should be between 8 pages in APA format.
(Can be divided in Sub categories, I will create title page)
