Case Study
You are working in the community as a community nurse. You visit Suzie at the family home and notice that one of the children, Ava, who is 3 years of age, has bruising around her left eye. Both Suzie and Ava appear quiet and withdrawn. When you ask Suzie how Ava hurt her eye, Suzie says, Ava tripped over a toy and hit her eye on the sofa.
When you return to the community practice, you log into the IT system, you notice a ‘red flag’ on Ava’s notes. You see that a neighbour contacted the Police six months ago complaining that they heard Suzie shouting and screaming at her husband and heard ‘things hitting the wall’. A quick read of the notes reveals the following: Suzie lives with her husband and her 3 children. Ava attends a local nursery, but her attendance is poor Suzie experiences anxiety and depression which is usually well controlled, but Suzie has no support. Both Suzie and her husband are off work due to ill health. Suzie’s husband has been involved in taking illegal drugs in the past.
What are the elements of adversity, resilience, vulnerability and a protective environment for this family? What are your key priorities? How could you help build on existing strengths to support this family? What other agencies might you want to contact?
