ONE research article will be reviewed (de la Peña, 2009, available in Brightspace D2L.
Title: The Beneficial Effects of Anticipating Anxiety-Related Symptoms: An
Investigation of Paradoxical-Success Imagery in the Laboratory). A review of three to
five pages (12pt. font, Times Roman, 1 inch margins) and double spaced. Summarizing
the article will be written using basic APA format. This assignment is simply an article
review, using some aspects of very basic APA formatting (citing and references). Your
review will be graded on your ability to express your understanding of the article with
clarity and effectiveness in the following areas:
Problem and Previous Research
What is the problem or central area of interest? Give a brief description of previous
research and competing ideas.
Purpose and Primary Hypotheses
What is the purpose of the study (i.e., what are they trying to prove?). What is the
primary hypothesis (and secondary hypotheses is any)? Who were the participants? What
is(are) the primary independent variable(s) (i.e., primary variable(s) of interest)? What is
the primary dependent variable (primary measure) and secondary measures?
Methods
What were the basic methods/procedures (e.g., groups compared and what they were
required to do)?
Results and Discussion
What were the general outcomes (results) and conclusions of the study?
Application
How might these findings apply to your life even if you do not like sports? You are
encouraged to revisit the video titled, “Making Stress Your Friend” that we discussed in
class (posted in Brightspace D2L), and discuss the implications of how you might
interpret anxiety symptoms constructively.
References
You will need 4 to 8 references in your paper. The first will be the article itself (de la
Peña, 2009) and the rest will likely be from the studies you read about in de la Peña
(2009). You may use outside references as long as they are from refereed journals or
reputable books. Up to two citations from respectable webpages can be used as long as
you have at least 4 journals cited.
