Description
In this assessment, you will be exploring a range of roles that are available to graduates of a Bachelor of Psychology degree. As discussed in the early stages of this course, your career path may not necessarily progress in a linear way. Indeed psychology, as a study in human behaviour, is used widely in everyday life and the society in general. Whilst the common perception of a psychology degree is to lead to a career as a psychologist, the knowledge in various branches of psychology and the skills and abilities developed through your study can be applied to a wide range of occupations.
It is important, as students, to be aware of the types of roles that are available and what the roles involve, in order for you to think about your existing knowledge and transferable skills, as well as identify areas of development.
Specifically, you will explore role responsibilities of two (2) job advertisements (that you could realistically apply for at the completion of your degree without extensive further study), and discuss the psychology concepts/principles and transferable skills that are associated with the roles. You will also identify any areas of development, and discuss what skills and attributes you can bring to the roles.
Aims
The aim of this assessment is for you to begin to identify your own transferable psychology skills and knowledge (psychological literacy) and how they relate to your career pathway, and finally, to help you explore what you can do with an undergraduate degree in psychology.
By completing this assessment, you will be able to:
Apply psychological knowledge to contribute to development of a professional identity
Reflect on how personal psychological literacy can be applied to personal development and career planning
Identify and explore gaps in existing career-relevant knowledge and skills
Instructions
Students are required to select two (2) aspirational jobs from a range of career sectors provided.
1. Choose two (2) job advertisements from the list below (see Selected Job Ads document for further details) that you may be interested in applying for when you graduate with your bachelor’s degree.
Please refer to the Selected Job Ads document for the full advertisement details.
2. Using the template document provided, for each of the 2 jobs selected:
a. Outline why the role is attractive/interesting to you (150 words). This summary should discuss what specifically is attractive about the role to you, why you would want that position, and how you may be suited to the position in the future.
b. Identify 4 key responsibilities associated with the role AND for each responsibility, describe (90-120 words each responsibility).
One key psychology concept/principle relevant to the responsibility that you would bring from your psychology degree
One transferable skill (from the APA Transferable Skills) relevant to the responsibility. Note – You only need to reference the APA Transferrable Skills source once per job, not for every responsibility.
3. Once you have explored your two roles of interest, consider your current knowledge and skill levels at this point in your degree. Identify and describe four (4) psychological knowledges or transferable skills that you would need to build/further develop to be a competitive applicant for these positions (e.g. 2 knowledge and 2 skills) (Approx. 600 words).
Note: There is no set number of references required for this assessment, however, we would expect approximately 10 sources to be included to demonstrate connection to course content and evidence of own research.
