This model emphasizes the importance of recognizing relevant clinical cues or data points, synthesizing this information to form clinical judgments or diagnoses, and implementing appropriate actions or interventions based on those judgments. Both models emphasize the iterative nature of clinical decision-making, highlighting the importance of ongoing assessment, analysis, and intervention to optimize patient outcomes. As a PICU registered nurse, I have utilized these models in caring for critically ill patients and their families by systematically assessing patient conditions, identifying relevant clinical cues, formulating appropriate clinical judgments, and implementing evidence-based interventions to address patient needs. These models have helped me prioritize patient care tasks, anticipate potential complications, and collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to provide holistic and patient-centered care in the clinic setting.

Nurses with diverse clinical backgrounds bring valuable insights and expertise to their APN role, enabling them to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care across a range of healthcare settings (Wong et al., 2015).
During this transition, the APN’s patient care approach may be influenced by their clinical experience as an RN in several ways. Firstly, their familiarity with direct patient care processes, such as conducting assessments, administering treatments, and managing patient care plans, provides a solid foundation for advanced practice roles (Wong et al., 2015). Additionally, their experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams and coordinating patient care transitions can enhance their ability to function autonomously and effectively within the APN role (Wong et al., 2015).
Furthermore, APNs with prior RN experience may adopt a more holistic approach to patient care, drawing on their understanding of patients’ physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs (Wong et al., 2015).
