This is another opportunity for you to write a one-page, three-paragraph professional business letter, this time to someone you wish to thank sincerely. Please follow the direction below very carefully.
Too often we live our lives without caring enough for those who truly believe in us and help us along the way to achieve our goals and gain fulfillment in life. Even the slightest bit of help, a lending hand, from someone, a stranger perhaps, sometimes pushes us toward a successful and happy life or inspires us to do great things during our brief journey on earth.
The Topic
Think of someone, outside of your inner circle of relatives and friends (no relatives or friends; otherwise points will be deducted) who has helped you in some way in your life; someone who has inspired you to reach your greatness or higher potential. This person could be a manager you work with or have in the past, a coworker, a customer service person at a store or a business, a police officer, a bus driver, a postal worker, a teacher (elementary school to SMC)—not me since I’m the one assigning this–an interviewer for a job you applied for recently, etc.
This inspiring person could even have been a total stranger to you, a blind person walking with a cane and struggling to cross a heavy intersection, or a person close to your age on the bus or at Starbucks diligently reading a college text book and writing away, doing her/his/their homework.
Make this person real, make your experience real, don’t imagine this person. Your work has to be based on truth only then is it sincere; please don’t copy a story from somewhere or create a story—both would be false and will get a zero grade. Remember that TurnItIn identifies plagiarized (copied) material with a percentage grade.
Use the formal business letter format, and actually plan on sending it once it’s been graded—unless the recipient is a random person, a member of the public.
If you don’t know the person’s name or address, (if this person is a total stranger to you), begin with the date and the opening salutation such as Dear Sir, or Dear Madam, or make up a name such as Dear Math Teacher of ABC High School, or Dear Helper at the Bookstore, etc. Otherwise, write a complete letterhead as shown in my Letter Format document, (just remember to put a period after abbreviated words in the address such as Blvd., etc.).

HOW TO STRUCTURE YOUR LETTER
Opening paragraph:
Write a sentence or two (maximum three brief sentences always in the opening paragraph) on the purpose of your letter, why are you writing to this person.
Middle paragraph/the Body of the letter:
Explain all the reasons how this person has helped you in your life, what did this person do that led to your success. Be as specific as you can be here. You may use bulleted or numbered list if you wish, or write a paragraph of about six to eight sentences.
Closing paragraph:
In a brief sentence or two (maximum two brief sentences always in the closing paragraph) write something positive and forward-looking that would make the person you’re writing to feel your sincerity and want to hold you in high regard.
