The research topic here won’t be “the importance of vaccines,” but rather, “The belief that vaccines cause autism is wrong,” or “the belief that the COVID vaccine was a population control mechanism initiated by a One World Government is wrong.” In other words, you’re going to write on a weird belief, a claim that that you can, initially, investigate, and then DEBUNK, using secondary research to disprove the claim you’re examining. Finally, and most importantly, you’ll analyze how and why thinking has gone wrong, using the vocabulary from the text. You won’tbe writing how and why vaccines keep us healthy, or how they’re made: different paper. Your topic is narrower: “Here’s a weird, dumb belief about vaccines.”
You’ve been doing this all semester long, using various examples of weird beliefs: “there was a heroin epidemic in Northfield,” “Take Hydroxycut and lose weight quickly and easily,” ” some people have the ability to talk with the dead.” All of these are weird beliefs. We looked at the evidence for these beliefs, and then demonstrated why exactly these are weird beliefs. Finally, we explained how thinking went wrong: “emotive words and language,” “anecdotal evidence,” “scientific language was confused for scientific methods,” and so on.

Introduction

The thesis statement establishes that we are dealing with a weird belief–this topic is, for example, an example of a pseudoscience, or the product of conspiratorial thinking–and clearly announces the writer’s position on the topic.

The thesis statement may be closer to a statement of fact–“acupuncture is a healing technique”–than an argument, failing to offer a claim that can be developed in the body of the paper. Primary sources will be used chiefly to illustrate “faulty thinking.” The writer will use credible, relevant, resources to debunk the topic. The writer’s use of evidence always supports the essay’s thesis. Ten to fifteen percent of this essay should consist of direct quotations, not much more, and not much less. The writer establishes his or her sources’ credentials in a signal phrase.
3 While the writer meets the essay’s source requirements, sources may not always support the essay’s thesis, and connections between the thesis and supporting examples may be unclear. Sources may lack appropriate signal phrases establishing the significance of the citation, and direct quotations may not be adequately analyzed.
