I have an annotated bibliography with all of the sources included, therefore you will be able to rely on that bibliography to write this essay. I also have 2 body paragraphs that can be further developed.
Below are the instructions for the essay.
The first step you will have to take in your paper (which will be the first body
paragraph(s)) is establishing the existence of an ethical problem through the
existence of a specific monster. This is something you addressed in Essay 1, but your
thoughts and support for this stage of the argument should be more developed by
this point, strengthened by including more evidence from more sources, as well as
discussing a personal connection you have to this problem (this helps root your
essay in pathos in addition to the logos of evidence from outside sources).
**This step also needs to incorporate criteria from an outside source defining ethical
standards in order to show how the problem is a “problem” in ethical terms (i.e.,
identifying who is being “harmed,” etc.). (There is more on ethics here.)
Once you establish the ethical dimensions of your problem (possibly through some
discussion of the nature of your “monster” and how they reflect/evidence this
problem, and through the personal connection you make), then you have to think
about what evidence from your outside sources from your Annotated Bibliography or
elsewhere would support an argument about the effectiveness of a potential solution
to the problem.
-Each body paragraph will be graded based on using the MEAL plan criteria. The E
for all body paragraphs will be information from outside sources. This means if you
have a body paragraph with no outside sources, you have a body paragraph without
any evidence.
MAJOR REQUIREMENT: You will incorporate a minimum of SIX outside sources
to support your argument (the majority of these should be used as Evidence in the
body paragraphs). TWO of these sources must be scholarly and ONE must identify
the ethical standard you are using to define the ethical dimensions of your monster-
related problem. The information in your sources needs to be specific to your
problem or to topics related to your problem.
You are being asked to 1) state a contestable claim or thesis, 2) develop that claim
by stating your reasons in the form of main points or topic sentences, 3) support
your reasons with specific evidence, examples, and other data, and 4) acknowledge
and respond to conflicting or alternative perspectives, taking them into account
rather than ignoring them.
The structure of the paper will depend on your own thinking and not your sources.
This is not a place to lump your paragraphs from your Annotated Bibliography all in
a row. You may end up using some or parts of those paragraphs, but they should be
organically integrated and relevant to your own points.
You will persuade me to see through your eyes by using specific language and
evidence rather than passionate generalizations, examining conflicting viewpoints in
detail, and establishing the credibility of your sources. Avoid absolutes like: always,
all, everyone, never.
Your paper will be in MLA format:
You’ll want to consult this MLA Format checklist to make sure you’ve done
everything. Remember RRW chapter 14 is also a good MLA format resource.
You will include a new page entitled “Works Cited”:
Gives the formal citation for your article in MLA (Works Cited) format. You can find
the general guidelines of and models for MLA citations by consulting: the Purdue
Online Writing Lab (OWL). The Works Cited citations do NOT count as part of the
paper’s word count.
**It will be 5 points off your overall paper grade if you are missing your Works Cited
page!
Sources and Resources
Any of the sites listed below, or articles accessed through those sites, may be used
as your ethical standard source for Essay 2, though you can also find your own. You
should not use more than one of these sites in your paper, though
I have an annotated bibliography with all of the sources included, therefore you
