On the contrary, she was snubbed, slapped, lectured, and exhorted.” Explain the implications of this statement in Woolf, and then tell me, does this still describe the situation of many or most women in the US today?
Marx predicts a rigid classification between those who own the means of production and those who function as exploited workers. Has his prediction come true in the US today? Are we divided into Marx’s categories?
Karl Marx begins his Manifesto by saying that all history is the story of class struggle. Is he correct? You don’t need to examine all history, but any place or time that might interest you. Another way to think of this is, did Marx’s division of classes exist in whatever era you examine?
After reading Francis Bacon’s The Four Idols, choose one (or at most two) of his Idol categories, define the Idol according to Bacon and give examples; and then tell me whether Bacon is correct: does language (Marketplace), or our own prejudices and experiences (Cave), or reliance on other weak philosophical systems (Theater), or the human mind itself (Tribe) get in the way of our pursuit of truth?
