ASSIGNMENT #3
“The constant division between the normal and the abnormal, to which every individual is
subjected, brings us back to our own time, by applying the binary branding and exile of the
leper to quite different objects…” (331)
Michel Foucault, “Panopticism”
How do notions of “the normal” and “the abnormal” shape debates on the body?
Assignment #3 is a research paper in which you must construct an academic argument
about a specific issue related to power, social norms, and the body.
Assignment #3 requires students to apply skills developed throughout the course.  As in Assignment #1, you will have to analyze texts closely and relate sources to the course’s
theoretical foundation, Michel Foucault’s “Panopticism.”  Additionally, you will have to draw
on research skills used in Assignment #2 to evaluate and select sources appropriate to your discussion.  Unlike the first two papers, Assignment #3 requires you to forward a position on the issue and support that opinion with relevant evidence from both course and research
texts.
In order to complete Assignment #3, you must do the following:
Forward a clear, arguable position on a topic related to the body;
Support the position with evidence from both course and research texts;
Carefully introduce and summarize texts so that citations are understandable;
Cite directly relevant textual material from all texts; (use in text citations with last name and page number)
Explain how the citations support the thesis;
Meet the conventions of academic discourse, including a correctly-formatted Works Cited page;
Meet the following source requirements:
The argument must cite directly Foucault’s “Panopticism”;
The argument must cite directly one scholarly article on the syllabus; (attached to order; Thomas)
The argument must cite directly a minimum of four research articles, only one of which may be a popular source.
Required Length: 6-8-pages, not counting the Works Cited page–6-full page minimum;
Papers must be Times Roman 12-point font, double-spaced, standard margins.  Papers that do not meet these specifications will not be accepted.
