An ongoing societal concern is school safety. School violence, including mass shootings, have repeatedly occurred and garnered national attention. School systems across the country have had to grapple with this problem from the perspectives of the various stakeholders including students, school employees, and others. Schools systems, especially public schools, must work within the parameters provided by government structures on the local, state, and federal levels. The responses of schools has been varied and have included increased physical security, metal detector implementation and more. Corpus Christi Independent School District has passed a policy – effective for the 2023-2024 school year – that requires all students in primary and secondary levels of education to use clear backpacks/bookbags.
