For the final deliverable for this case study, you are to write a case study on a specific urban technology. Below is a list of technologies to choose from and a framework to use for developing your case study. You will need to conduct research and consult additional primary and secondary source materials related to your chosen technology.
Urban Technologies:
Autonomous Vehicles – self-driving cars, such as Cruise( https://www.getcruise.com/ ) and Waymo ( https://waymo.com/ ) and their rollout in cities such as San Francisco ( https://www.curbed.com/article/waymo-cruise-driverless-cars-robotaxi-san-francisco.html ).
Framework:
Your case study should consist of the following sections:
Introduction – What is being studied? Why is it important? Introduce your selected urban technology and the key issues at stake, stating the research problem and its significance. Provide a roadmap for your readers that helps them understand the scope and purpose of your study.
Literature review – summarize existing research and reporting on the selected technology. Place relevant sources in the context of their contribution to understanding your case study. Locate your own research within the context of existing literature.
Discussion – present the urban and social implications of the selected technology. Build on the topics and themes presented throughout the course lectures and readings. Be specific with regard to how the technology mediates between a city and its citizens and potentially transforms the quality of urban life (for better and/or worse). Include an analysis of its spatial impacts, data practices (capturing, processing, storing, accessing), participatory models (open/closed, individual/collective), and potential harms (biases, discrimination).
Conclusion – summarize your key findings in relation to your main argument.
