Introduction
In this unit, you will learn about the social and religious aspects of Athens and Sparta. They were the largest and most powerful of the Greek city-states and were somewhat polar opposites. While Athens was a “limited democracy” as you learnt in the previous unit, Sparta was an oligarchy. This unit will make you familiar with each and show you the differences. You will also study Greek art, architecture and religion to understand how each of these were interconnected and influenced the society and culture as a whole.
Many of the famous structures around the world have been inspired by classical architecture. This shows that ancient civilizations have not entirely died out as they continue to live among us in some form or the other. For example, the Renaissance in Europe was a time when Greek and Roman cultures were revived.
Classical art, architecture, literature and philosophy were revived by Renaissance artists, poets and thinkers alike. They considered these civilizations as the bedrock of humanity and were inspired by their belief in humanism. Many aspects of the Greek religion also survive today. For instance, the modern calendar system referred to as the Gregorian Calendar is based on elements from the Roman or Julian Calendar which itself was largely influenced by Greek religion and myth.
