Directions
Step #1–Revisit your research
Maybe in the process of completing Week 9 and Week 10 work you realized that some of the articles you’ve found aren’t really relevant to your research. Maybe you need to do a bit more research, that’s OK! This week, you will need to have THREE academic, peer reviewed articles. You are allowed to use two that you did for the synthesis assignment and/or the Critical Response assignment. However, the third article must be one that you’ve not used to complete and assignment for yet.
Step #2–Do the learning
Because this is an online class, your learning is self-directed. This means you have to take responsibility for engaging with the learning materials provided to you in each module, and for remembering and applying this learning as you move through the course. Have you watched, read, and participated in ALL of the learning content in this week’s module? If not, DO NOT CONTINUE until you do. Circle back and learn!
Step #3–Write a thesis-based 7-paragraph guided response essay
Use this outline to write a 7-paragraph critical response essay:
Paragraph #1 Introduces the subject, provides context, summarizes the broad conversation happening out the topic over time, states YOUR thesis.
Paragraph #2 Takes one of the main discussion points (for example * in the videos) about the subject discussed in the majority of articles and performs a synthesis. The topic sentence in this hamburger paragraph will both help you prove your thesis and critically respond to the texts you are considering.
Paragraph #3 Takes another one of the main discussion points (for example ! in the videos) about the subject discussed in the majority of articles and performs a synthesis. The topic sentence in this hamburger paragraph will both help you prove your thesis and critically respond to the texts you are considering.
Paragraph #4 Takes another one of the main discussion points (for example # in the videos) about the subject discussed in the majority of articles and performs a synthesis. The topic sentence in this hamburger paragraph will both help you prove your thesis and critically respond to the texts you are considering.
Paragraph #5 SHOWS and EXPLAINS why the merits of one article make it more significant than the others. This is helping you prove your thesis true.
Paragraph #6 Again, SHOWS and EXPLAINS why the merits of one article make it more significant than the others. This is helping you prove your thesis true.
Paragraph #7 Quickly and BRIEFLY, in not more than a sentence summarizes each source you’ve considered. Revisit, to EXPLAIN what, SPECIFICALLY, makes the source you feel has the most merit more important/significant/valuable than the others. Again this is YOUR BRAIN producing ideas original to YOU on a value system of YOUR OWN DESIGN.
Additional details (stuff you ALSO need to do)
Things to notice that you need to do:
Your thesis should be in the subject + purpose + point of view style where your subject is to prove (argue) WHY one article is the most important/valuable/best over the others.
ONLY the first and last paragraphs include any form of summary. In para. 1, the whole subject itself is being summarized (There are myriad perspectives on the best ways to train dogs. These range from x, to y, to z.). In para 7 we are getting ONLY ONE SENTENCE summaries of each of the three articles.
EVERY paragraph (save for possibly the intro where your topic sentence = your thesis and is at the end of the paragraph) will be in the ‘hamburger’ style with a clear topic sentence that is YOUR OWN IDEA (NOT summary! NOT AI or plagiarism!).
Paragraphs, and ideas in them are held together with strategically and intentionally places signpost words
Paragraphs 2-6 will use EVIDENCE from the texts to support the topic sentences, but NOT in the form of direct quotes, rather paraphrase and strategic summary (think the 1-2 words or a phase as noted in the synthesis video on the “Circling back to Synthesis” page in our module.
Refer to authors by LAST NAME.
Include in-text citations with the page number of where the information you are using comes from.
Include a works cited that lists all three of your sources according to the MLA. Remember, a works cited is on a separate page!
Uses the MLA format
