As we explored the dual role of the arts in the human journey.  It reflects back

April 19, 2024

As we explored the dual role of the arts in the human journey.  It reflects back to us the human condition-our world as seen through the eyes of the artists – as well as offering us with new ways of seeing our world and the possibilities. The possibilities inherent in our choices both individually and collectively. As we move forward through time, we’ll look at diverse genres and investigate how artists accomplish this in every form-paintings, poetry, music, dance, sculpture, novels-all offer unique windows into the soul of humanity.  The work of artists can be beautiful and uplift our heart and soul, bringing comfort during times of sorrow and amplifying moments of joy.  It can also equally reveal the darker side of humanity, reflecting back to us parts of human nature and human actions that can (and should) cause us to question and sometimes deplore our actions.  Art does all of this – which is why it’s an inseparable part of being human. From the beginning, millennia ago, humans have been driven to create art as an expression of the myriad and complicated thing called humanity.
Our study of the Humanities also requires us to try to understand some of the pivotal periods in history and the human endeavors – the good, the bad, and the ugly – that have shaped the present. One of these pivotal periods – one that still reverberates today – took place in the early modern period:  the Atlantic Slave Trade. A period when human beings were bought and sold and regarded as property. A period when the economies of various countries were built on this horrific practice and even rationalized and institutionalized slavery as “god’s will.”  As we explore this dark period, we’ll try to understand the choices made by individuals and collective societies, and also look at how artists attempted to express individual experiences and the collective consciousness of the people in that time.
