The USDA defines food insecurity as “reports of reduced quality, variety, or
desirability of diet.” In the United States, there are an estimated 34 million
people experiencing food insecurity. This includes 9 million children who are
food insecure. In recent years, there has been an emphasis on nutrient security,
which is more specific to ensuring the regular diet provides quality nutrients to
best support health (e.g. quality protein, vitamins, minerals). Visit
https://www.feedingamerica.org/ to learn more about food insecurity and
initiatives to address it. Then, research initiatives specific to a population (e.g.
college students, older adults, children, pregnant females) and write a paper
about efforts being taken to address food and nutrient insecurity in that
population.
