*For this assessment, you can choose to answer either Option 1 or Option 2.
Option 1:
Task: Read Herrick’s “The Origins and Early History of Rhetoric” chapter and answer the two questions listed below.
Demonstrate what you know about the sophists from the reading. Answer the following: Who were the sophists? What did they do? Why were they controversial (hint, there’s multiple reasons discussed in the reading) ? What were their beliefs?
Discuss one prominent person discussed in the reading. What was their major contribution to the study of rhetoric? Why did you choose them; what makes them interesting to you?
Tip: It would be helpful to utilize the module videos and additional content included in Module 11 for option 1. Use APA citation format to cite any of the places you pull information from.
Option 1 reference (APA):
Herrick, J. (2005). The origins and early history of rhetoric. In The history and theory of rhetoric. Pearson
OR
Option 2:
Task: Read Herrick’s “An Overview of Rhetoric” chapter and answer the two questions listed below.
Herrick identifies six distinguishing characteristics of rhetorical discourse, that rhetoric is: (1) planned; (2) adapted to an audience; (3) shaped by human motives; (4) responsive to a situation; (5) persuasion-seeking, and; (6) concerned with contingent issues. Unpack and explain what each of these six components entails.
Find and identify an example of a rhetorical text/discourse that demonstrates those six characteristics of rhetorical discourse– (please include a description or link to the discourse/text you’ve selected in your response, the Mary Fisher speech and the Trump and Kennedy SOTU speeches should not be used for this assignment and will result in a significant loss of points.) Remember, your example could be something like a commercial, speech, a scene from a television show or movie, anywhere there’s something rhetorical/persuasive (or political) happening. Then, unpack your example and explain how it illustrates each of the six components.
Option 2 reference (APA):
Herrick, J. (2005). An overview of rhetoric. In The history and theory of rhetoric. Pearson
Criteria:
The recommended length for this assignment is 3 – 5 pages (if you go a bit over this, that’s alright, this is just a suggested page range that would typically suffice for this assignment)
Your explanations should be thorough and examples should clearly demonstrate your grasp of the module materials, you also must respond to all parts of the questions in their entirety or you will lose points (see assignment rubric).
Your responses must be complete grammatically correct sentences (no bullets or diagrams), written at a college level, and contain accurate information derived from the readings, module materials, the required outside academic sources, and cited accordingly.
Please format your response in Times New Roman or Arial, 12-point font, and double-space it.
Citations:
Please use formal APA style in-text citations and references to properly cite any information that is coming directly from the reading or outside source.
Tip: Go back and review the Module 2 resources on citing and review previous assessment feedback.
Review: In-Text Citations: Author/Authors (Links to an external site.)
