Toulmin Arguments attempt to convince others of the validity of a claim, supported with effective reasoning and evidence. Analysis places an important role in every argument, because as we present and support our arguments we must examine the parts of our topic, our claim(s), others’ claims, and our evidence. The Toulmin model structures arguments as claims, reasons, warrants, backing, evidence, qualifiers, and rebuttal. Other parts, such as a statement of authority, help support these fundamental parts, and as we will see, the pieces of a Toulmin argument can be exchanged and mixed. Keep in mind, however, that we must always have at least one claim and supporting reasons or evidence for that claim. The Toulmin model applies the same ideas we have discussed but expands on them, taking into account the underlying assumptions our claims and evidence are based upon and requiring us to structure our claims and support with concise explication and analysis of our ideas and of others’ points of view.
