In Rhys Southan’s “Is Art a Waste of Time?”, the authorwrites about changing the world, examining the potential (and potential problems) of Effective Altruism. While Malcolm Gladwell’s article “Small Change” questions whether the ties enabled by technology can create social change by contrasting them to the relationship that powered the civil rights movement. For this assignment, create an outline, which will become the basis of your draft, in which you examine the power of the individual in producing social change using both authors’ articles.
To help you begin your critical thinking on this assignment, consider these questions: (1) Does change start with individuals or in our relationship with the world around us?, (2) Do weak and strong ties play a part in Effective Altruism?, or (3) How doe friendships and other relationships complicate the notion of replaceability? In developing your outline, you may find it helpful to establish a link between these questions instead of trying to respond to each question individually. In other words, HOW or WHY can the power of an individual produce social change? The answer to this question can become the thesis of your paper. You may also find it helpful to define the term Effective Altruism and include SPECIFIC examples that support or challenge the authors’ claims. Your outline must include a discussion of both authors’ essays and not simply a summary of the article.
