MA 03: Research Log 3 Assignment Sheet
Synthesis matrix and supplemental sources
Task
Create a synthesis matrix. Add existing relevant logged source information (4+ sources)-> I attatched MA log 1 and MA log 2. Find in this sources.
and new source information (4+ sources) to this synthesis matrix. -> I found 3 sources. (File: Exploring ~,Media~,The Softening~) If this sources is not appropriate, you can change another sources (0-5yeas
The new sources you select should be credible and any source type.
The purpose of this final research log is to help you find sources to fill in any research gaps related to theme, perspective, and/or source type.
Instructions
Step 1: Construct and Analyze a Preliminary Synthesis Matrix
Construct a Preliminary Synthesis Matrix: A “synthesis matrix” is a concept map—a way to visually organize your sources to discover connections among them that might not be immediately apparent. It’s a research tool that helps you make sense of the complex relationship between your sources, and can be used as a road map for your outline and your draft.
List the sources (with partial citation and source type) useful for answering your refined research question down the first column of your matrix. Then, break down your research question and research findings into three or four themes and list these themes across the top row. Work to input quoted material from each source into the corresponding theme cell (along with the page or paragraph number where you found that material).
Analyze Your Preliminary Matrix: Read across each source row to identify which sources are least useful (based on the extent to which they contribute to your themes) and need to be replaced or supplemented. Then, read down each theme column to (a) identify which themes need more source support in general, and (b) analyze source connections (how your sources agree with, disagree with, and/or complicate one another) as a means of determining which themes need additional sources that contribute different perspectives and/or otherwise add nuance to the debate.
Step 2: Log Supplemental Sources that Fill the Identified Gaps
Add Supplemental Sources to Your Matrix: Collect credible sources that fill the informational and perspectival gaps you identified. Add your supplemental sources (with partial citation and source type) to the first column of your matrix, integrating them amongst your existing sources. Then, work to input quoted and/or paraphrased material from each supplemental source into the corresponding theme cell (along with the page or paragraph number where you found that material).
Synthesis Matrix
Place your current research question and thesis statement at the top of the page. This will serve as the guiding framework for your synthesis matrix.
Decide how you want to organize your research. Choose from theme, problem–cause–solution, or general to specific. The thematic approach is widely favored in literature reviews. Incorporate your chosen structure into your matrix.
Add themes or topics as column headings, aligning with your selected organizational style (thematic, problem–cause–solution, etc). Feel free to modify these headings that assume “thematic” organization.
In the final column, include background information and definitions of key concepts. Adapt the heading of this column based on your needs.
Fill the matrix with source information from your research logs.
Transfer relevant summary or direct quotation information from your MA 01 and MA 02 research logs into the matrix. This information should reflect diverse perspectives (agreement, disagreement, alternative perspectives, etc.). 9
Enclose direct quotations within quotation marks, accompanied by a page or paragraph number. The absence of either of these things will be considered plagiarism.
Ensure to include source information from at least four (4) sources from your previous logs. If necessary, return to these sources to locate more substantive or detailed information.
Fill any gaps in the synthesis matrix with information from supplemental sources. For this third log, include citations and quotes from at least four (4) new or supplemental sources. All new sources should be recent (0–5 years). Highlight new source citations. [Reminder: For MA 04, you need a minimum of four (4) scholarly sources and two scholarly (2) sources per theme/subsection, so consider ensuring you meet this same requirement for MA 03.]
Demonstrate source connections within a theme. Highlight how these sources agree or disagree with each other. Use a mix of colored notes, arrows, or similar methods to illustrate these connections.
Add partial citation information for each source to the matrix. Write the in-text citation for each of your sources in the column on the left of the table.
Create a list of references. Add full bibliographic citations for each source included in the synthesis matrix to the “references” page below the table. You should be able to copy and paste some of these from your research logs. State the name of and use the citation style preferred by your discipline. Sources should be listed alphabetically.
Based on this sample and guideline, please fix my research log 3(Soomin Park_ENGH 302-K03_MA03).
Also, I attatched MA log 2 academic sources. I’m not sure that using exising quotes or not by doing existing logged sources. Thus, please do this 2 version. (just add one versiononly 4 sources in MA log 1 & MA log 2)
