Chapter 3 discusses the regulation of the family as an institution. Address the following and support your assertions with citations and personal or vicarious examples:
- Assess what “ideal” family means to you. What does it look like? Is there an “ideal” family? Why or why not.
- Identify a social institution that you believe has promoted inequitable programs, laws, or systems that affect “family” that you have personally or vicariously experienced or witnessed.
- Evaluate which sociological theory best supports your viewpoint about family based on your own experiences and explain why.
- Assess, based on the ideology about marriage promotion programs, if do you agree or disagree with its constructs. Why?
- Describe, based on your understanding, why you believe that (or disagree with) the suggestion that some social institutions (e.g., the criminal justice system, economies, educational institutions, and government policies) have created obstacles for some families while providing a hand up for others? Include any personal examples that you may have personally or vicariously experienced that support your beliefs.
