Question To be Adressed- How does Yiddish culture engage with Jewish tradition?

Question To be Adressed-
How does Yiddish culture engage with Jewish tradition? How does at least one of the
texts we read from Week 6 onward engage with Jewish tradition in a meaningful way? What
in the text allows us to understand the relationship between Jews and Judaism? How does the
context of modernity inform that relationship (reinforcing it, challenging it, subverting it)?
Part 1. Your 4th response paper will actually be
a proposal (300 words) that describes your topic: the question you
are answering and how you will answer it. What sources will you use? ( Question
I have provided and attaching 1 source.) What themes will you focus on?
Provide a rough outline of how you will approach your script. 1st part is the
outline that you have to give me for the script you will create to
answer this question.
Part 2- Script: Your written script must be 1000-1250 words.
• Include an introductory
paragraph that asserts your thesis statement. If you are writing a dialogue,
have a speaker state the thesis as what will be discussed.
• Select a narrow focus to
present a compelling argument in a short timeframe which you will support with
careful analysis of quotations from at least one text we read and
quotations or points from five (5) primary or secondary sources you have
located. Primary sources include poems, stories, photographs, or interviews.
Secondary
sources include newspaper or academic journal articles.
• At least two (2) of your
sources must be peer-reviewed journal articles. Your focus should be on at
least one text we read, but you are encouraged to investigate other works by
the same author. You must use parenthetical citations in your essay to
acknowledge ideas from sources as you refer to them. Use the (Author, Date)
format.
• Include transitions between
ideas and paragraphs..
• Additional online
resources: Google Scholar (for help locating academic articles); the YIVO
Encyclopedia; the online peer-reviewed journal In geveb; and the numerous
articles,
blog posts, and oral histories on the Yiddish Book Center’s website.
•As you respond to your
research, acknowledge the kinds of materials you are using. A newspaper editorial
differs from an article in an academic journal. An authority on a particular
topic can
lend perspective that others can not. Similarly, essays by and interviews with
authors can provide information that sheds light on their work. Make it clear
that you know the difference between different kinds of sources and why you are
using them.
You can quote texts or include images, segments of recordings, or videos, but
you must
acknowledge all sources that you did not create.
You should investigate existing documentaries or videos to approach the genre
and subject
differently. For sample podcast episodes, see “The History Chicks.”
Also “Material Girls.”
Remember to give your script a title! It will help to frame and focus your
project.
You
must include a list of works cited at the end of your script acknowledging all
sources you
have consulted, including webpages, interviews, and audiovisual materials. You
must use your
own words and cite all sources appropriately. Using others’ words or ideas
without
acknowledging them is plagiarism.
Remember to use proper Chicago-format citation in your script (use footnotes)
and in your
bibliography.
Integrate quotations correctly. Remember that you need to analyze quotations
that you
include. Select quotations in which the language is necessary. You will lose
points for failing to
do so. If you can put a quotation in your own words, you don’t need to quote it
and you can
summarize its contents and cite the page number in parentheses or a footnote.
Assessment Rubric
Your project will be assessed using the following criteria:
Exceptional
Script
• A thought-provoking script
that is clearly written, demonstrating creativity and thorough
engagement with texts.
• Supports a focused thesis,
considering its implications.
• Reflects careful research
with at least five sources, acknowledging the kinds of sources
they are (primary [poems, photographs, stories, interviews] and secondary
[journal
articles]).
• Quotations are analyzed and
incorporated effectively, functioning as parts of sentences.
• Sentences demonstrate
clear, engaging use of language.
• The conclusion draws the
argument to a close, makes a connection to a new context, and
suggests directions for further research.
• Includes correct grammar,
punctuation, and Chicago style for in-text citations and list of
works cited.
• Illustrates creativity in
its approach to the assignment.
Podcast or Video
• The project reflects
practice or revision, reading or speaking clearly and engaging the
audience.
• The project is innovative,
and its design works well with its content.
