Up until now, you have been studying about the effects of fast fashion and how to approach the phenomena – through critical thinking, awareness and creativity. You have explored artists, designers and other MAKERS in ACTION who embody change by developing creative strategies and direct actions that address their interests, passions and politics. The open questions, knowledge and experiences that you have exchanged amongst yourselves has hopefully allowed for an alternative way of exploring issues that matter so much that cannot be risked to be over-mediated by rights or wrongs.
In the same vein and energy, we now turn to BEAUTIFUL TROUBLE – a toolbox for creative direct action. This website is a wonderful resource for tools on how to approach the issues that matter to us by considering a web of power dynamics, power structures, strategies, methodologies, principles, theories and tactics that can potentially come into play when working for CHANGE and POSITIVE IMPACT.
Let us now briefly practice applied creative and critical thinking when we consider issues that matter to us!
Please follow the next steps in order to explore related theories, principles and tactics that connect to the issues and topics that are important to you.
1. Think of an issue that is important to you and state why. For example, this could be about something that is happening in any of your social groups, communities, work, interpersonal relations, public life, the environment, politics, artworld, science, religion, philosophy, life style, technology, etc. Think of something that is CRITICAL to your SURVIVAL and WELLBEING and describe it on 1-2 sentences. (2pt)
2. Go to Beautiful Trouble Links to an external site. and browse the THEORIES https://beautifultrouble.org/toolbox/theory Links to an external site. section and choose at least one theory that connects to the issue that is important to you. If you do not see any theory that connects to the issues, please simply use this as a guide to help you think of a theory or topic it does connect to. Name the theory and state why it connects to the issue that you are focusing on. (2pt)
3. Continue browsing Beautiful Trouble Links to an external site. and search in the PRINCIPLES https://beautifultrouble.org/toolbox/principle Links to an external site. section to select at least one principle that connects to the issue that is important to you. Name that principle and state why it supports or relates to the issue you are focusing on. (2pt)
4. Now think of and write a message like a slogan, or short phrase that represents what matters to you about the issue by using the theory and principle you have connected to on Beautiful Trouble as a guide. Consider this slogan to be a call to action or support, a promotion for a cause, an inspiration to take initiative or an educational/awareness campaign. (2pt)
5. Finally, browse the TACTICS https://beautifultrouble.org/toolbox/tactic Links to an external site.section on Beautiful Trouble Links to an external site.and select at least one TACTIC that could be most relevant or interesting to you in addressing the issue that matters to you and state why. If you do not see any tactic listed that is interesting or relevant to your issue, you can come up with your own! Please use the TACTICS section as a guide to developing your own DIRECT ACTION/strategy on how to address the issue you are focusing on. (2pt)
It is important to remember that this assignment is an EXCERCISE only and does not require you to actually follow up with the action you describe in step 5. Hopefully, this assignment serves as a warm-up for selecting interesting topics for the FINAL AUDIO assignment.
