CRITIQUE – SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
You are to write from your experience of attendance at the production about which you are writing. The critique should explore your thoughts using, specific examples from the performance on the following acting elements:
Who are the “people” of the play? Write about two-three characters from the play. Describe the characters. How old are they? What do they do for a living? Where to they live or work? When do they live? The play may not explicitly answer those questions for you, what do you think?If the character is too young to work, what do they do with their lives?
Describe what you think the characters wanted (their overall objective/goal)–what goal propels them through the play? What were they after? Did they succeed or fail? How? Why? Use specific examples from the play to support your thoughts.
Describe, in detail, how the characters changed from the first moment you meet them in the play, through to the last moment in the play.
Look at the clothing that each character wore, and describe, in detail how that particular costume helped (or hindered) your understanding of the character.
Describe, specifically, what was your favourite scene in the play. Use very specific examples from the production to back up your opinion.
What do you think the actors might have done to create their character?
What were their physical and vocal considerations/requirements? physical actions, vocal choices? How did these physical and/or vocal elements help you understand the character?
How did the actors physically relate to or create the environment of the play?
How did the actors create relationship between characters?
Speculate on what kind of research would the specific actor/s need in order to create their character and why?
What was your reaction to the actor’s work creating their characters?
If you were in the play, which character would you like to play? And why?
What did you find different about a live theatre performance compared to a performance on TV or in films?
How was your experience of attending a live theatre performance?
