In synthesis writing, you pull the main ideas of several texts together to support a larger main point or argument. You will focus on two texts: one short story and one poem. Avoid just summarizing the works; you want to make sure you pull their ideas together to show what they are expressing together.
Directions
Write a multi-paragraph essay answering the following prompt:
What is the Modernist authors’ message about life in the author’s world?
Choose a Modernist trait and include it in your message/theme.
Ex. In X poem and Y story, the authors use the Modernist traits of _____________and __________________ to explain how_____________________________________________.
It may be helpful to center your response on a topic that the authors cover in both pieces (i.e. relationships, love, connection, communication, vulnerability/honesty)
Your thesis should state your message about life in the author’s modern world, and that is what you are proving. Remember: you are writing about a topic, not necessarily about the texts. You will use the texts (stories/poems) to prove your point.
Cite all texts, include in-text citations, and include a works cited page.
