Background Information about the Student: Sebastian is a 3rd grade English language learning student. He was born in the United States, but his parents are from China. Sebastian speaks Chinese at home and English at school. During the assessments, Sebastian tried to read fast as if it were more important to finish quickly rather than comprehending what he was reading. Even though the student had a helpful attitude and never complained about what he was doing, his miscues increased by the end of the sessions, which the assessor interpreted as being due to weariness and boredom. All assessments were completed in a quiet environment so the student could feel safe and relaxed. The assessor also worked to build trust with the student first by asking him about his favorite activities. For the informal writing sample, the student wrote about a topic of his choice. Sebastian told the assessor he loves to swim more than anything. Even though Sebastian preferred to not speak very much, he did express that he enjoys painting, drawing, blueberry lollypops, and playing video games. Although the student is still working on developing grade-level proficiency in English, he seems to otherwise be developing typically.
Report Guidelines:

For each assessment, identify one strength and one need as it relates to the student’s reading, language, and/or writing development.Cite specific examples from the assessment when describing strengths and needs.
After analyzing the assessments and identifying strengths and needs, candidates will make recommendations for optimizing student success through well-targeted instructional strategies. Candidates should identify a total of four research-based instructional strategies. Each strategy should specifically address an identified strength or need based on the assessment results. The strategies recommended should be best practice research-based strategies. Candidates will also include a rationale for why each strategy is beneficial for English language learners or how it would be modified to be used with English language learning students. Each strategy should include at least two different APA citations/ references supporting the benefits of this instructional strategy.
