Instructions
In writing your argumentative essay, be absolutely certain that:
1) your essay responds to the prompt directly, not tangentially.
2) in making your case, you deploy external research that is relevant, phrased, and explained in a way that would make sense to an intelligent person who may not have considered that information previously. You should cite at least three peer-reviewed sources (other than course readings) in creating your argument.
3) the novel you choose MUST be cited accurately. Please do NOT assert things without very clear evidence from the novel–accurately cited.
4) You will be writing an argument about ONE novel.
5) The suggested length is 350-500 words.
• You should be sure to consider all of the evidence available to you in constructing your argument, though of course only some of it will actually be included.  In other words, select your evidence carefully.
***When you quote or paraphrase in the course of the essay–please include author and page numbers in inline citations.  HOWEVER, there is no need to use a formal works cited page–but the texts you use should be listed at the end of the essay–author and title are sufficient***
Using one specific event from a novel we have read this semester, please forge an argument about access to health care, health services, and medicines.
You only have enough space and time to make a very limited argument–FOCUS your argument appropriately.  This is not a philosophical think piece–so be specific and be direct.
Please do not simply claim different populations have inequitable access to healthcare–we know this. Be specific, and forge your argument around how the novel represents a specific aspect/consequence of this reality–and make an argument about that.
Please do NOT write a ranging op-ed piece about systemic discrimination–write an argumentative essay that uses critical texts and a specific example from a novel from the course to bolster, clarify, or support your focussed and singular argument.
Your main argument should be clearly stated and should be supported with concrete and specific evidence.  Dig deeper not wider.  MORE specific details–less broad statements.
Do not simply narrate or summarize the material of others.  Do not create a shopping list of examples–focus as tightly as possible on a single and clear line of argument.
Show that there is thought behind your argument–both common sense and critical acumen.
When you paraphrase or take a short quote, cite your source properly (author and page–with author and title of work listed at end of essay).
A paper that contains no references to both the novel and critical texts is not acceptable.
This assignment is not limited to western medicine; it may also refer to traditional medicine, folk medicine, or other relevant healing modalities.
