The primary focus of the Research Paper is to recognize and appreciate the relationship between law and business. This needs to be a paper on a civil law legal case within the last 3-5 years. You must write about a civil law case, not a criminal law case.
You will identify a topic that you find interesting then research it from a business law perspective. You should choose a case that discusses a TOPIC that we went over in class. Prior to starting to write you should make sure the case was approved by Dr. Page. Use the attached rubric to write your paper because I will use it for grading.
You paper should be structured in the following manner:
Tell the reader the issue and why there was a case filed or there was a controversy.
Tell the reader where the case was filed and what court it takes place in.
Tell the reader the facts about the case and the controversy, which side made which claims. This section should be at least a page to describe the matter of law and the people involved.
After giving details of the case and the issues involved, discuss the history of the law in the United States. For example, if the case is about Casandra Elizabeth “Cassie” Ventura’s lawsuit against Sean Combs, also known as Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, or Diddy; you need to discuss that Cassie’s lawsuit was in Federal Court and she filed for sexual abuse and rape (this was a civil suit, not a criminal case). For the history section, you would need to discuss the history of sexual assault cases and civil rape cases in the US. This section should be more than one paragraph, but not more than one page.
Analyze the case- how does the case affect business specifically for the plaintiff and defendant and then discuss more generally how the case affect the law in US courts? Discuss how the outcome will affect other cases. If the case is still being decided, discuss the possible effects on each side as well as businesses and other people.
Give you opinion of the case. Which side do you advocate for and why. Explain your reasoning. You should use phrases such as “In my opinion…” so it is evident that you are writing about your personal stance. Your opinion should discuss your feelings about the case AND you should discuss how you think the case will affect future similar issues. This section should at least be a full paragraph and preferably two paragraphs with your other personal thoughts.
The paper must be properly referenced and cited. You MUST use APA citations at the end of the paper. APA requires all citations to be single spaced and in alphabetical order. You should list any works you consulted. The more information you cite the better, and always give credit when you quote material. Citations are not required for your opinion.
Spelling, grammar, logical sentence structure is important for this paper. The paper should be:
5-7 pages minimum, not including the references page, it can be up to 8 pages.
typed, pages numbered, 12-point font, any font is acceptable as long as it is readable,
double-spaced with one-inch margins.
You should have a minimum of five (5) credible sources.
