Overview:
This project allows a student to apply human resource concepts to a restaurant example in a manner consistent with how a manager would perform when running an operation. The assignment allows the development of skills and knowledge linked with course objectives including:
Examine the basic management activities and organization structure of hospitality and food & beverage operations.
Explore each step within the employment life cycle.
Identify and articulate the advantages and disadvantages of online human resource platforms and human resource outsourcing.
Analyze how U.S. employment-related laws impact human resources practices and articulate methods for assuring a healthy, inclusive, productive, and legally compliant work environment.
Assignment 2 is a continuation of assignment 1. You will use the same restaurant company you selected for assignment 1 when completing assignment 2. See sections 4-6 below for more information.
Section 4: Human Resource Recruiting (5 points, 1-1½ pages)
This section requires you to write a basic recruiting plan to fill the position noted on the job description created in your first assignment. The plan is a list summarizing how you will recruit and fill the position – written as though you would use the list to actually recruit for the position. Following guidelines presented in your text (pgs. 40-47), write a strategy for recruiting to fill the position. Conduct internet research to determine how the restaurant company you selected currently recruits employees. Keep in mind that most of the major chains use five methods for recruitment : direct sourcing, networking, college recruitment, job fairs, and internet-based recruitment. Use research and evidence to inform your answers instead of opinion.
Deliverables:
Write a brief recruitment plan summarizing how you will recruit and fill the position linked to the job description you drafted in assignment 1.
In narrative form, answer the following questions:
How will you recruit to fill the position (give examples of each mode)?
How and where will you advertise for the position?
How will you assure inclusivity and avoid inappropriate discrimination when recruiting?
Section 5: Employee Screening and Selection (5 points, 1 – 1 ½ pages)
In this section you will write a brief employee screening and selection plan for the position you seek to recruit following guidelines presented in your text (pgs. 48-58).
Deliverables:
Write a brief employee screening and selection plan for the position noted on the job description in assignment #1.
In narrative form, answer the following questions:
What criteria will you use to pre-screen candidates for the position?
Once you have a list of candidates, what questions will you ask of each candidate?
What criteria will you use to guide your final selection while abiding by best practice when it comes to diversity, equity, and inclusion?
Section 6: New Hire Check List (5 points, 1 page)
Now you will create a new hire checklist. Review textbook pages 70-75 for insight and page 73 specifically – for a sample checklist. Use this example to guide the development of your own checklist. Once you have your checklist, summarize in narrative form the items you consider to be the five most important on the checklist.
Deliverable:
A completed new hire checklist consistent with the example from your textbook.
