DIDCUSSION: Identify and define the local problem you will address in your analysis.
The local problem that I will address in my healthcare policy analysis is drug overdose and substance abuse within our community. Drug overdose and substance abuse refers to the misuse of both legal and illegal substances. It leads to severe health consequences including overdose and addiction.
Include background information about the problem.
The issue of drug overdose and substance has now become a public health worry in our community. There has been a significant increase in misuse of prescription painkillers and also illicit drugs including heroin. This issue has led to an increase in overdose and related deaths. The use of other drugs such as cocaine within the community has greatly contributed to substance use disorder (McLellan, 2017) around the community.
Describe why the topic is important.
Addressing this issue is important to the community and the overall well-being of everyone. It has negatively impacted people’s lives, families, and also the community at large. Drug abuse has been leading to many preventable deaths in our community. It has also extended its negative impact beyond health issues bringing social and economic challenges (Healthy Life Recovery, 2021). Families are torn apart, also there has been a productivity decline while other parents are suffering from chronic diseases such as hypertension due to stress. All these consequences declare the importance of addressing this topic with openness.
Explain why the topic needs to be addressed now.
There is a great need for immediate address of this issue. The problems it has been causing are escalating rapidly. There has also been an alarming number of deaths and strain on healthcare and the emergency response system and when such case start to emerge there is need to address the issue immediately (McLellan, 2017). Additionally, there has been a stigma that is associated with substance abuse. It has greatly affected people from seeking help, making the situation worse. If the issue is addressed early and been put effective policy measures, it will help to curb the epidemic of drug overdose and substance abuse in our community. It will help in safeguarding public health and individual well-being.
