Part I
Outline/Brainstorm:
Step 1: Create a complete and comprehensive brainstorm chart, and …
Step 2: …a one page outline with a strong thesis statement.Create an outline. Please write legibly. Make sure to include a draft of your thesis statement with all of the essential ingredients and a draft of your conclusion in the outline. Include quotes that you plan on using, specific in-text citations, and an explanation of the meaning and relevance of the quote that describes how it relates to your overall thesis statement. Include at least three quotes in your outline and essay.
Both your outline and your brainstorm need to be at least one page in length.
Topic:
Compare and contrast a current events topic in the news with: Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States: 1942-Present or one of the following books or short stories we have read in class like Fastfood Nation , “Harrison Bergeron” or Why Are All of the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria. Choose a main topic (ie. Racism, gender discrimination, classism, capitalism, socialism, slavery, wage slavery, sweat shops etc.) from one of the previous titles of assigned readings and compare it with an issue that has appeared in a news related periodical in the past ten years. Some examples might be: contrasting contemporary trends in multi-cultural education with Dr. Tatum’s theories on the effect of stereotypes and misinformation on the development of racial identity, or comparing the government’s use of propaganda in the media with Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron.” Make use of your research skills when selecting and defining your topic and sub-topics. Choose your own current events topic from a news periodical, as long as you make use of one of the assigned course readings: Fastfood Nation, “Harrison Bergeron,” Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States: 1942-Present or Why Are All of the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria in your compare and contrast essay. Make use of your critical thinking skills to construct a thorough analysis of the current events article and the reading you selected from the syllabus. Use primarily facts to support the ideas and inferences in your analysis.
