1.Students will choose a healthcare-related topic to investigate using a cultural safety framework. Students will develop a research question as
they begin to explore sources for their annotated bibliography and their
final class project. The annotated bibliography should comprise of six peer reviewed sources that directly address their research question. Each of the six annotations must include: (1) an APA formatted citation of the source,
(2) a 150-word summary of the source, and (3) a 50-word minimum
discussion describing how the source helps to answer their research
question.

Journal article: “ Culturally Safe Nursing Care for Black Sex Workers in the Greater Chicago Area, 2020-2021”
This article focuses on the supplying of culturally safe nursing techniques for the needs of African American sex workers in the sizeable Chicago area. It discusses challenges faced by this community and population, including prejudices, discrimination, barriers, and any other obstacles to takes away from their access to health care access these workers may face in their cities. Research methods included interviews and focus groups from this region’s population to ensure the most accurate data and information were collected to provide strategies in providing safer environment for these workers During these investigations, it was found that African American sex workers aim to have an environment with respect and understanding when dealing with healthcare interactions. By generating an understanding after reading this article, we have the potential to amplify the voices of this isolated group.
This article is related to class material because it addresses issues with cultural competence and restricted health care access due to healthcare inequality. These are problems that can be faced and resolved with understanding from where this group comes from, understanding their background, and being transculturally competent. This is in all forms across the board of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Understanding these issues can create more patient-focused care for the needs of diverse populations.
While you may ask, does this article show class concepts or are there any new concepts introduced? Cultural humility is an important and sensitive subject in the nursing practice that has been discussed previously. Also, new insights are introduced when discussing the experiences of African American sex workers. By culturally safe approaches being proposed, new tailored needs are fulfilled in terms of a safe multicultural nursing practice.
This article is relatable to me from a viewpoint of being a Biracial woman, (Puerto Rican and African American) who has lived in urban areas that provided poor healthcare based on discrimination. I have witnessed poor access to healthcare and biased healthcare at that. Which led to very serious illnesses/ infections and, and in some cases, death. Believing in a system where there are no indifferences that restrict access from providers and services. By addressing and understanding the structure of cultural differences and how they can impact populations like these. Nurses can contribute to health equity and reducing inconsistent access to quality care. Hospitals and other facilities can use this research to create policies and procedures aimed in supporting the needs and health of African American sex workers as well as other troubled populations.
