Liberalism was one of the primary political, social, and economic ideologies of the nineteenth
century. Explain the core ideas of and different strains of liberalism from roughly 1815 to the
1870s. What did liberalism have to do with and say about social class, industrialization,
nationalism and imperialism? In what ways did it and its main adherents respond to the other
main political ideologies of the period? Be analytical in your essay and support your main points
with examples from the class.
Chart the development, spread, and various forms of nationalism up to 1871. What were the
various factors and ideas that led to its genesis and then how did it proliferate? How did the
various political ideologies we’ve discussed view nationalism and engage with it? What was the
response to nationalism by the different political systems present in nineteenth-century Europe?
Was nationalism a source of political cohesion and mobilization, or more a tool to divide and
fragment?
Note: You will be graded on bringing in material from the class including lectures, your
textbook, and primary readings. You will not do well on the exam if you rely on general
information rather than material directly tied to the course. Do not use any online sources.

free to provide basic information, such as title or author, when referring to primary
readings. Use standard format: one-inch margins, double-spaced lines, with standard 12-
