Below you find the writing prompt for the Semester Paper. Please answer the question with as much detail and as thoroughly as possible. You are encouraged to utilize all assigned readings, your notes, and my feedback from the semester to compose a clear and insightful response. Below are the expectations for your papers.
Your responses must be in essay format (i.e., Introduction, Body, and Conclusions with proper sentence and paragraph structure). The creation of tables, charts, graphs, or bullet-pointed lists are not appropriate response formats. Also, do not include an abstract or running head.
Do not summarize Beckett and Herbert (2009) in your response.
Your responses must demonstrate an analysis and synthesis of course materials and topics as they relate to Beckett and Herbert (2009).
The majority of your response in this paper will be similar to your response to Question 3 in each module’s writing assignment.
Support for your positions must be drawn from academic sources, not your personal opinions.
Material from assigned course readings and other readings included in your responses must be paraphrased. Paraphrasing means that you’re expressing the authors’ ideas in your own words.
Do not utilize close paraphrasing. Close paraphrasing includes changing only several words in a source sentence, relying on the original authors’ sentence structure, etc.
Do not include directly quoted material from any sources in your responses.
The use of direct quotations will result in a minimum of 25 points (25%) deducted from the final paper grade.
Do not plagiarize material in your paper.
Plagiarism will result in a score of 0.
Internet websites are not to be utilized as sources for your responses.
Your responses must be in APA format with proper in-text citations and references.
The “Module Assignment Template” may be used with minor modifications to the headings.
Cite a minimum of 8 articles and/or books assigned over the course of the semester.
Those papers that do not meet the minimum of 8 citations from assigned articles and/or books will have a minimum of 10 points (10%) deducted from the final paper grade.
You may cite outside sources as necessary, but these sources are not counted toward the minimum.
Papers must be between 4 and 6 pages in length (not including your title page or reference page(s)). The minimum is 4 complete pages of text, not at least one line of text on a 4th page. The best way to be sure that you have 4 complete pages of text is to have your paper response carry-over to a 5th page.
Those papers that do not meet the minimum of 4 complete pages will have a minimum of 10 points (10%) deducted from the final paper grade.
If you need a refresher on proper APA citation, please refer back to Module 1.
If you are unsure in how to proceed, please contact me so we can sort through the issue(s).
Assigned Readings: Semester Paper
There are no new readings for the semester paper. Your response should be based upon a synthesis of all assigned reading materials for the course and the book by Beckett and Herbert (2009). You may include additional outside sources in your responses if you wish. Those outside sources must be cited properly though. Be sure to address all portions of the question.
Paper Question
According to Beckett and Herbert (2009), the citizens of Seattle have called upon their local government and police to make changes in their communities. To this end, the Seattle Police Department has employed Stay Out of Drug Area orders, Stay Out of Areas of Prostitution orders, and the Trespass Affidavit Program to restrict individuals’ access to large geographic sections of the city (i.e., banishment). Explain how the use of these tools by police represents change in methods of social control from efforts by individual commercial property owners (informal) through the legitimizing of modern “banishment” as enforced by the police (legal/formal). Identify and describe the outcomes associated with this form of aggressive order maintenance. Based on knowledge gained over the course of the semester related to law and the three forms of social control discussed, which of the three alternatives proposed by Beckett and Herbert (2009) to address “banishment” would be the most effective? Why?
Assessment: Semester Paper
Your response will be evaluated on their level of detail and thoroughness in addressing the questions. Additionally, your paper will be evaluated on proper spelling, use of grammar, and APA format. Proofread your responses before submitting them, and be sure that you have answered all portions of the assigned question.
Reminders regarding social control
Informal social control occurs between individual citizens and group members. The police have the authority to act on behalf of the state and do not engage in informal social control.
Legal/formal social control is the use of citations, laws, policies, procedures, etc. that are based in the authority of government.
Medical control/medicalization is the construction of a medical framework around a social issue. Denying access to medical care/treatment is not a form of medical control.
